Effective Paging-system Design and Installation

Data and voice cabling systems are very important for your business and School .You can open other great opportunities to get more income  by  designing and installing paging systems. Paging systems offer a lot of benefits to businesses in terms of increased profits. They  make  it possible  for  you  to  get  emergency notifications and reduce the time you spend as you try to locate your staff on the premises. Paging gives time notifications for changes in shifts and makes it possible to make public address notifications.

There are six things that you must know when designing a paging system beginning with the definition of the sound itself.

· Sound: This refers to oscillation in the form of energy that is transmitted through matter.

· Sound measurement that is recorded in decibels.

· Media that carry sound: The broadcast mechanism allows the transference of current to audio sounds such as horns or speakers.

· Sound element: It is good to note that sound cannot appear at a medium. It has to be generated to it through an amplifier.

· Wattage: This represents the power that is brought to the medium from the amplifier.

· Sound propagation: This is the process by which sound is dispersed at different distances.

Paging technologies

In the modern days, there are two forms of paging technology used. We have the 24 volt and 70 volt central amplified. The two are different that affect the way they are used and how they are installed. The 70 volt central amplified system makes use of one power supply. On the other hand, the 24  volt SA system makes use of many power supplies. The 70  volt CA works on a single pair cable, while the 24 volt system works on a two pair cable. It is more economical to use the 70 volt system when working in large or medium projects. It  also  gives  100  percent of its full rated power. When you use the 24 volt system, you will encounter loss of power as a
result of loss of DC line.

Techniques in system design

You are required to take some steps to make the paging system work effectively. The first thing you need to do is to carry out a site survey. The  survey  allows you to view all physical obstructions and any other thing that may obstruct sound movement. Blueprints
are also necessary because they assist you to plot where to place horns and speakers.

Another  major  step  is  making  identification  of the topology and environment. You have to consider if the installation will be done outdoors, indoor  environment  or  in  both. Then you are required to establish the full cubic footage area that will be covered. Make
sure you consider hallways, ceiling heights and private offices.

You  should  have  a  sound pressure level meter which is used in measuring the level of sound pressure in a certain location. You
should also have the SPL charts which help in listing of the Db levels of the common items and environments.Another major reason you need to undertake the survey is because the dispersion patterns differ. Every environment is unique and the  dispersion rate is determined on several factors such as product racks, wall and ceiling racks, presence of tunnel, machinery and alley effects.

Selection of the speaker

The right medium for a paging system is the ceiling speaker, a horn or a wall baffle.

Ceiling speakers

The speakers are used together with drop tile ceiling panels and should be used in heights ranging from eight to twenty feet. They transmit sound the same way a flashlight transmits light. They are available in many types some with a volume control.

Wall baffles

They  are  used  in  case  there  is  no  ceiling panels or if there is a problem with height. They are effective in environments where
spacing  and  forward  coverage are important. In most cases, they are placed twenty feet apart and they should never at any time oppose each other directly.

Horns

Horns  are  mostly  used in manufacturing, outdoor environments or warehouses. They can be mounted fifteen to twenty plus feet
from the ground and placed fifty, but not more than a hundred feet apart.

It is simple to determine the number of speakers to be used in a typical office environment. You should never use Daisy chain wiring
of speakers. The most  effective  method  is  to  use  a  layout that looks like a bus/star combination. The cable should run from an
amplifier to one row of speakers and another running from amplifier to the other row.

The  waffle  baffle  layout  is easy.  Determine the right distance among the baffles and make sure that none of them stand directly opposite to each other to get the best results.
